Napa Valley

November 20 ~ 23, 2007

Our Napa Valley experience was November 20 ~ 23, 2007. Auberge du Soleil is a beautiful hotel property terraced down a Rutherford hillside with views of Napa Valley. The landscaping and sculptures contributed to its charm. During our Napa visit, the weather was spectacular – cool mornings and comfortable sunny days.

The bar and restaurant served excellent cuisine with a panoramic view.

All 50 rooms and suites feature Mediterranean-inspired décor with original contemporary art. Our spacious hillside suite had 1,254 square feet of indoor and outdoor space.

California’s Old Faithful is one of the few geysers in the world that perform at regular intervals. The 350-degree water shoots approximately 60 feet into the air for three or four minutes. Repeated performances are an average of 40 minutes apart.

Our tour and wine tasting at Beringer, one of the original Napa wineries, was memorable. We visited four other wineries.

St. Helena is a quaint town with excellent shopping.

Being one-half Croatian descent and favoring Croatian wine, I was interested in the learning about Mike Grgich (Grgich Hills Estate), who emigrated from Croatia in the 1950’s to Napa Valley. Mr. Grgich is famous for his Chardonnay that won top honors in 1973 in Paris. He is also known for having the Zinfandel genetically tested that proved that the American grape is an ancestor of the Plavac Mali grape in Croatia.
