South America Cruise

Dec. 31, 1998 ~ Jan. 16, 1999

Our cruise aboard the Royal Princess around South American began in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on May 7, 1999 and ended in Santiago, Chile, on May 19.  Unfortunately I did not thoroughly document every stop on the way even though I had recently acquired a state-of-the-art digital camera with 1 mega pixel sensor.  Buenos Aires and Santiago were interesting.  The scenery of the Chilean fjords and glaciers were spectacular.  My excursion on an Antarctica overflight was inspiring and magical.

Cape Horn

Cape Horn can have rough seas and cause much discomfort to those sailing on ships.  Furthermore, rough weather damage has been inflicted on large ships even a U.S. nuclear aircraft carrier.  Fortunately, we had sailed through the cape on calm seas during a sunny day.

Antarctica Overflight

The Antarctica overflight in a commercial jetliner proved to be an once-in-a-lifetime experience.  After a briefing, we boarded this aircraft for a 2-hour flight to the tip of Antarctica.  By comparison, a ship crossing the Drake Passage takes at least 2 days for the 650-mile journey depending on sea conditions.  Once we arrived at the Antarctica Peninsula, our plane descended to approximately 1,000 to 2,000 feet above Antarctica for views and photos.  Everyone aboard had a window seat.

Beagle Channel & Chilean Fjords

The scenery of the Beagle Channel and Chilean fjords was marvelous.  The Andes Mountains, glaciers, fjords and ocean were just beautiful.
