Western Mediterranean Cruise

May 7 ~ 19, 1999

Our cruise of the western Mediterranean aboard the Holland America Rotterdam began in Lisbon and ended in Rome.   Unfortunately I did not thoroughly document every stop on the way.  To supplement my lack of photos, I have inserted post cards on my website from some of our shore excursions in hopes that the slideshow_test is a little more meaningful.

Tiny Gibraltar is only 3 miles long and 1 mile across.  Although it is the tip of the Spanish peninsula, Gibraltar has strong ties to UK rather than Spain.  Known to the ancient world, the rock of Gibraltar is almost 1,400 feet high.

Florence is rich in art and architecture.

Carthage was founded in 814 B.C. by the Phoenicians, an advanced maritime trading culture with its heartland in the Middle East.  Carthage was destroyed and rebuilt by the Romans.
